After all, the hardware can be repaired or replaced, while data, in the form of photos, videos, even emails and other files, is often unique. Here we talk to the Toshiba Data Recovery Service about how they go about retrieving lost data.
Every computer user should regularly backup their data, just in case the worst happens and you develop a problem. Toshiba offers a host of on-site and off-site repair services and one of the more specialist services is that of recovering lost data.
We spoke to Toshiba Product Manager, Lindsay Hatchett about how Toshiba Data Recovery Services can make a real difference to the life of your laptop.
What are the most common causes of data loss?
There are typically three types of data loss that we see. The first is 'accidental deletion' whereby the user mistakenly gets rid of something they later find they need. The most worrying is often caused by external forces, in the form of viruses and malware.
The final form of data loss is due to hardware failure, where physical damage to the hard drive read write heads and drive platters results in data loss. In all these cases we can look at ways of helping the end user retrieve data.
How does the Toshiba Data Recovery service work?
The faulty laptop is routed to a repair centre, as with any repair or warranty repair. The hard drive is removed and sent to Recovery Labs, who recover the data and restore it to a new drive, which is then returned to the repair centre for fitment and return to the end user. Recovery Labs will then destroy the old hard drive, thus maintaining the security of any sensitive data.
How long does it take typically for Toshiba to recover a customer's data?
We aim to work within a framework of approximately two weeks from first being notified of a problem to resolving it.
How can Toshiba users protect against data loss?
We have a selection of external hard drive offerings, which have either NTI® Backup Now EZ software, or Nero BackItUp & Burn Essentials software, that we recommend to end users.
