EasyGuard - Protecting your HDD

Continuing on from the other EasyGuard blogs we have, the next along is in regards to the protection element. In particular the protection of your HDD or hard disc drive. With laptops ever more portable and the rising popularity of mini-notebooks, the chances of laptops being taken out the home or office increases the chance of damage along the way.

Dropping your laptop is likely to damage the outer chassis which in some cases may be reparable but in some cases not. The real danger though is if the HDD gets damaged and as a result you lose important files, photos and documents that are needed. These could well be irretrievable. So what can be done to protect the HDD? Well a couple of things actually. If your laptop has EasyGuard such as the Tecra R10, Portégé R600 or many more then your HDD will be safer than most. Firstly the HDD is encased in rubber so that if your laptop suffers any shocks or vibrations it will have the necessary buffer around it.

In addition there is also the 3D Accelerometer. This is basically a monitoring system that detects when the laptop suffers shocks, vibrations or when it is in freefall. If one of these does occur then, thanks to the sensor, the magnetic head is removed before impact to stop the HDD being damaged or destroyed. As a result it will minimise the chances of data being lost or damaged. This is now also a feature on our NB200 too.

It goes without saying the best course of action is to look after your laptop and ensure any chances of freefall or shocks are kept to a minimum. Where this isn’t possible though EasyGuard can step in and help protect.
