
Over 50 years with AI: Toshiba’s future eyes
The 1960s saw the first manned space flight launch. In the same decade, Toshiba invented the world’s first letter sorting machine in 1967. With the ability to read handwritten postal codes, and to sort six letters a second, the machine dramatically sped up letter sorting, which was until then a manual process. The OCR technology Toshiba invented 50 years ago was an AI trailblazer. Today, it is a widely used application.
